The recommended dose of Hydrea (Hydroxyurea) varies according to the specific condition being treated, the response to therapy, the other medications used, whether radiation is being used at the same time, the stage of condition, and the body weight of the recipient.

For the treatment of tumours, of the head and neck, the usual adult dose is 80 mg per kilogram of body weight taken in one dose every third day. If radiation is also being used, hydoxyurea dosing should start at least 7 days before the start of radiation and continue throughout and after treatment, unless there are extreme side effects.

For the treatment of resistant chronic myelocytic leukemia, the recommended adult dose is 20 mg to 30 mg per kilogram of body weight taken daily.

Many things can affect the dose of a medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are taking the medication without consulting your doctor.

It is important to take Hydrea (Hydroxyurea) exactly as prescribed by your doctor. If you cannot swallow capsules, you may empty the contents of the capsule into a glass of water and drink it immediately. Be very careful not to inhale the powder or let it come in contact with your skin or mucous membranes. If you spill the powder, wipe it up immediately with a damp towel and dispose of it along with the empty capsules. Empty capsules should be disposed of in a closed container, such as a plastic bag.

If you vomit shortly after taking the medication, contact your doctor for instruction on whether to take more medication or not. If you miss a dose of Hydrea (Hydroxyurea), call your doctor for instructions on how to proceed. Do not take a double dose to make up for a missed dose.

Your doctor may want you to drink extra fluids while taking Hydrea (Hydroxyurea) in order to help you pass more fluid and protect your kidneys.

As well as interfering with the genetic material DNA of cancer cells, Hydrea (Hydroxyurea) can interfere with some of your normal cells. This can cause a number of side effects such as mouth sores. Keep track of any side effects and report them to your doctor as suggested in the section "What side effects are possible with Hydrea (Hydroxyurea)?"

Store Hydrea (Hydroxyurea) at room temperature, protect it from light and moisture, and keep it out of the reach of children.

Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.
