Before you begin using a medication, be sure to inform your doctor of any medical conditions or Allergies you may have, any medications you are taking, whether you are pregnant or breast-feeding, and any other significant facts about your health. These factors may affect how you should use Bricanyl Turbuhaler (Terbutaline-inh).
Appropriate use of the medication: Terbutaline should not be used on a regular daily basis without appropriate regular daily use of an inhaled anti-inflammatory medication (e.g., budesonide, beclomethasone, fluticasone, triamcinolone).
Diabetes: Terbutaline may cause an increase in blood sugar levels (may cause a loss of blood glucose control) and glucose tolerance may change. People with diabetes may find it necessary to monitor their blood sugar more frequently while using Bricanyl Turbuhaler (Terbutaline-inh).
If you have diabetes or are at risk for developing diabetes, discuss with your doctor how Bricanyl Turbuhaler (Terbutaline-inh) may affect your medical condition, how your medical condition may affect the dosing and effectiveness of Bricanyl Turbuhaler (Terbutaline-inh), and whether any special monitoring is needed.
Heart rhythm: Beta-agonists such as terbutaline can cause changes to the normal rhythm of the heart. If you are at risk for heart rhythm problems (e.g., people with heart failure, Angina, low potassium or magnesium levels), discuss with your doctor how Bricanyl Turbuhaler (Terbutaline-inh) may affect your medical condition, how your medical condition may affect the dosing and effectiveness of Bricanyl Turbuhaler (Terbutaline-inh), and whether any special monitoring is needed.
Inhalation-induced bronchospasm: Inhaled forms of medications may cause spasms of the airways, which make breathing difficult. If you experience this problem when using terbutaline, stop using Bricanyl Turbuhaler (Terbutaline-inh) immediately. Speak to your doctor if you experience any problems with breathing while taking this or other inhaled medication.
Proper use of device: To ensure you receive the proper dosage from your inhaler, ask your doctor, pharmacist, or other health professional to instruct you on its use.
Seizures: If you have a history of Epilepsy or medical conditions that increase the risk of seizures, discuss with your doctor how Bricanyl Turbuhaler (Terbutaline-inh) may affect your medical condition, how your medical condition may affect the dosing and effectiveness of Bricanyl Turbuhaler (Terbutaline-inh), and whether any special monitoring is needed.
Thyroid disease: People with an overactive thyroid gland may be more sensitive to the effects of terbutaline. If you have thyroid disease, discuss with your doctor how Bricanyl Turbuhaler (Terbutaline-inh) may affect your medical condition, how your medical condition may affect the dosing and effectiveness of Bricanyl Turbuhaler (Terbutaline-inh), and whether any special monitoring is needed.
Worsening of symptoms: If your symptoms don't improve or seem to get worse, check with your doctor. You may need a new plan for treatment. Contact a doctor immediately if you have acute or suddenly worsening shortness of breath. Increasing use of Bricanyl Turbuhaler (Terbutaline-inh) to control symptoms, especially on a regular basis or in high amounts, indicates a worsening of asthma control. Under these conditions, your treatment plan needs to be changed. It is not enough simply to increase the use of terbutaline under these circumstances, particularly over extended periods of time.
Pregnancy: Bricanyl Turbuhaler (Terbutaline-inh) should not be used during pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks. If you become pregnant while taking Bricanyl Turbuhaler (Terbutaline-inh), contact your doctor immediately.
Breast-feeding: Bricanyl Turbuhaler (Terbutaline-inh) passes into breast milk. If you are a breast-feeding mother and are taking terbutaline, it may affect your baby. Talk to your doctor about whether you should continue breast-feeding.
Children: The safety and effectiveness of using Bricanyl Turbuhaler (Terbutaline-inh) have not been established for children less than 6 years of age.
