Allerject How to Take

Allerject (Epinephrine) belongs to a family of medications called sympathomimetics. These medications resemble chemicals that are normally found in our bodies and are released during stressful situations, such as when we are scared, anxious, or angry.

Allerject (Epinephrine) is used for the emergency treatment of severe allergic reactions (Anaphylaxis (severe allergic reaction)) to insect bites, insect stings, food, medication, as well as other allergens (e.g., latex). During a severe allergic reaction, blood pressure can become dangerously low, breathing can become difficult, and the face and throat can swell. Others signs and symptoms can include Hives, flushing, fast heart rate, paleness, weakness, dizziness, stomach cramps, nausea, vomiting, and Diarrhea. Allerject (Epinephrine) works to reverse these effects.

Allerject (Epinephrine) may be available under multiple brand names and/or in several different forms. Any specific brand name of Allerject (Epinephrine) may not be available in all of the forms or approved for all of the conditions discussed here. As well, some forms of Allerject (Epinephrine) may not be used for all of the conditions discussed here.

Your doctor may have suggested Allerject (Epinephrine) for conditions other than those listed in these drug information articles. If you have not discussed this with your doctor or are not sure why you are being given Allerject (Epinephrine), speak to your doctor. Do not stop using Allerject (Epinephrine) without consulting your doctor.

Do not give Allerject (Epinephrine) to anyone else, even if they have the same symptoms as you do. It can be harmful for people to use Allerject (Epinephrine) if their doctor has not prescribed it.

Allerject Dosage

The recommended dose of Allerject (Epinephrine) is based on your body weight, your risk of experiencing a serious allergic reaction, and your ability to tolerate the medication. The usual dose for children and adults who weigh 30 kg or more is 0.3 mg. For adults and children who weigh 15 kg to 30 kg, the dose is 0.15 mg. For children who weigh less than 15 kg, other forms of Allerject (Epinephrine) may be prescribed.

The medication is injected into the thigh with use of a special automatic device that resembles a small case. To use the autoinjector, first remove it from the outer case. Activate the injector by removing the red safety guard. Then, jab the black end against the thigh and hold it there for five seconds. This will activate the plunger and the needle will be pushed into the thigh muscle to inject a dose of Allerject (Epinephrine). The injector will make a distinct sound (click and hiss) when you press it against your leg. There will be some solution remaining in the injector after injection, however the injection is complete. The voice instruction system will say "ALLERJECT has been used" and the lights will blink red. Seek immediate medical attention at the same time. If your symptoms have not improved within 10 minutes, use another dose if you have a second autoinjector.

It is important to use Allerject (Epinephrine) exactly as prescribed by your doctor. It is also important to know how to use the autoinjector properly. If you are not sure, ask your doctor, nurse, or pharmacist for a demonstration.

Many things can affect the dose of a medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you are using the medication without consulting your doctor.

Store Allerject (Epinephrine) at room temperature, protect it from light, and keep it out of the reach of children. The autoinjector should be stored in its original case. Do not use it if the solution is cloudy, discoloured or has particles in it.

Do not dispose of medications in wastewater (e.g. down the sink or in the toilet) or in household garbage. Ask your pharmacist how to dispose of medications that are no longer needed or have expired.

If you are taking any of these medications, speak with your doctor or pharmacist. Depending on your specific circumstances, your doctor may want you to:

  • stop taking one of the medications,
  • change one of the medications to another,

Medications other than those listed above may interact with Allerject (Epinephrine). Tell your doctor or prescriber about all prescription, over-the-counter (non-prescription), and herbal medications you are taking. Also tell them about any supplements you take. Since caffeine, alcohol, the Nicotine from cigarettes, or street drugs can affect the action of many medications, you should let your prescriber know if you use them.

Allerject Warnings

Before you begin using a medication, be sure to inform your doctor of any medical conditions or Allergies you may have, any medications you are taking, whether you are pregnant or breast-feeding, and any other significant facts about your health. These factors may affect how you should use Allerject (Epinephrine).
