Before you begin using a medication, be sure to inform your doctor of any medical conditions or Allergies you may have, any medications you are taking, whether you are pregnant or breast-feeding, and any other significant facts about your health. These factors may affect how you should use Propyl Thyracil (Propylthiouracil).
Blood counts: Propyl Thyracil (Propylthiouracil) can decrease the number of neutrophils (a type of white blood cell that helps fight infection), red blood cells (which carry oxygen), and platelets (which help your blood to clot). If you notice any signs of infection (e.g., fever, chills, or sore throat) or unusual bleeding or bruising, contact your doctor immediately.
Hypothyroidism: Your dose of Propyl Thyracil (Propylthiouracil) will be reduced or temporarily discontinued by your doctor if signs of hypothyroidism (such as weight gain, clumsiness, and intolerance of cold temperatures) occur during treatment.
Inflamed blood vessels: Rarely, Propyl Thyracil (Propylthiouracil) can cause blood vessels to become inflamed. This inflammation can cause changes to the blood vessels, reducing blood flow and possibly causing scarring, weakening, or narrowing of the blood vessels. This can result in organ or tissue damage. If you experience any unexpected side effects, such as difficulty breathing, rash, blood in the urine, or coughing up blood, contact your doctor as soon as possible.
Kidney problems: If you have kidney problems, discuss with your doctor how Propyl Thyracil (Propylthiouracil) may affect your medical condition, how your medical condition may affect the dosing and effectiveness of Propyl Thyracil (Propylthiouracil), and whether any special monitoring is needed.
Liver function: Propyl Thyracil (Propylthiouracil) may reduce liver function and can cause liver failure. If you have liver problems, discuss with your doctor how Propyl Thyracil (Propylthiouracil) may affect your medical condition, how your medical condition may affect the dosing and effectiveness of Propyl Thyracil (Propylthiouracil), and whether any special monitoring is needed. Your doctor may want to test your liver function regularly with blood tests while you are taking Propyl Thyracil (Propylthiouracil).
If you experience symptoms of liver problems such as fatigue, feeling unwell, loss of appetite, nausea, yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes, dark urine, pale stools, abdominal pain or swelling, and itchy skin, contact your doctor immediately.
Size of thyroid gland: Tell your doctor if the size of your thyroid gland increases during treatment with Propyl Thyracil (Propylthiouracil). An enlarged thyroid gland is a sign that you may need a lower dose of the medication.
Pregnancy: Propyl Thyracil (Propylthiouracil) should not be used during pregnancy unless the benefits outweigh the risks. If you become pregnant while taking Propyl Thyracil (Propylthiouracil), contact your doctor immediately. Women who may become pregnant should use effective birth control while taking Propyl Thyracil (Propylthiouracil).
Breast-feeding: Propyl Thyracil (Propylthiouracil) passes into breast milk. If you are breast-feeding and are taking Propyl Thyracil (Propylthiouracil), it may affect your baby. Talk to your doctor about whether you should continue breast-feeding.
