HEALTH CANADA ADVISORY
October 18, 2016
Health Canada has issued new restrictions concerning the use of Faslodex (Faslodex (Fulvestrant)). To read the full Health Canada Advisory, visit Health Canada's web site at www.hc-sc.gc.ca.
Driving: Faslodex (Fulvestrant) usually does not make you drowsy or impair your ability to drive or operate machinery. However, it may make some people feel weak. Do not drive or operate machinery if you feel weak.
Kidney function: People with kidney problems or poor kidney function should be closely monitored by their doctor while taking this medication.
Lab test results: Faslodex (Fulvestrant) can cause falsely high amounts of Estradiol (a type of estrogen) in blood tests. This can lead to misinterpretation of whether you are premenopausal or postmenopausal. Make sure all the medical professionals involved in your care know you are taking Faslodex (Fulvestrant).
Liver disease: Faslodex (Fulvestrant) may reduce liver function and can cause liver failure. Liver disease or reduced liver function may cause Faslodex (Fulvestrant) to build up in the body, causing side effects. If you have liver problems, discuss with your doctor how this medication may affect your medical condition, how your medical condition may affect the dosing and effectiveness of Faslodex (Fulvestrant), and whether any special monitoring is needed.
If you experience symptoms of liver problems such as fatigue, feeling unwell, loss of appetite, nausea, yellowing of the skin or whites of the eyes, dark urine, pale stools, abdominal pain or swelling, and itchy skin, contact your doctor immediately.
Risk of bleeding: Because Faslodex (Fulvestrant) is given by intramuscular (IM) injection, people with an increased risk of bleeding, such as those taking blood thinners (e.g., Warfarin) or those with medical conditions that can cause bleeding, should take extra care when giving themselves an injection.
Pregnancy: Faslodex (Fulvestrant) should not be used during pregnancy. It may cause severe harm to the developing baby if it is used by the mother during children. If you become pregnant while taking Faslodex (Fulvestrant), contact your doctor immediately.
Breast-feeding: It is not known if Faslodex (Fulvestrant) passes into breast milk. If you are a breast-feeding mother and are taking Faslodex (Fulvestrant), it may affect your baby. Talk to your doctor about whether you should continue breast-feeding.
Children: The safety and effectiveness of using this medication have not been established for children.
