[for GlucaGen]

The usual dose for adults and children who weigh more than 25 kg (55 lbs) and are 6 to 8 years and older is 1 mg (1 unit) injected into a muscle. For children who weigh less than 25 kg (55 lbs) and are younger than 6 to 8 years, the dose is 0.5 mg (0.5 units) or based on body weight.

To give a Glucagen Hypokit (Glucagon) injection, first prepare the injection. Do not prepare the injection until the medication is needed. Once prepared, use it immediately and do not store for later use.

  1. Remove the plastic cap from the vial.
  2. Pull the needle cap cover off the syringe.
  3. Draw up the water for injection (1.1 mL) in a disposable syringe (not needed for Hypokit).
  4. Insert the needle through the rubber stopper (within the marked circle) and inject the water for injection into the vial containing the freeze-dried Glucagen Hypokit (Glucagon).
  5. Without taking the needle out of the vial, shake the vial gently until the Glucagen Hypokit (Glucagon) is completely dissolved and the solution is clear.
  6. Make sure the plunger is completely down. While keeping the needle in the liquid, slowly withdraw the solution back into the syringe.
  7. Remove any air bubbles from the syringe by tapping on the needle with the needle pointing upwards, and push the plunger slightly to release any air that has collected at the top of the syringe.
  8. Continue to push the plunger until you have the correct dose.
  9. Inject into a muscle.

As soon as someone responds to Glucagen Hypokit (Glucagon), they should eat glucose (e.g., candy, orange juice, regular pop) to prevent low blood sugar from returning and contact their doctor.

Many things can affect the dose of a medication that a person needs, such as body weight, other medical conditions, and other medications. If your doctor has recommended a dose different from the ones listed here, do not change the way that you use the medication without consulting your doctor.

It is important that Glucagen Hypokit (Glucagon) be used exactly as prescribed by your doctor.

Store Glucagen Hypokit (Glucagon) in the refrigerator at 2°C to 8°C and keep it out of the reach of children. The Hypokit form of Glucagen Hypokit (Glucagon) can be stored at a temperature no greater than 25°C for up to 18 months, provided the expiry date is not exceeded.

[for Glucagen Hypokit (Glucagon)]

The usual dose of Glucagen Hypokit (Glucagon) for adults and children who weight more than 20 kg (44 lbs) is 1 mg (1 unit) injected under the skin, into a muscle, or into a vein. For children who weight less than 20 kg (44 lbs), the dose is 0.5 mg (0.5 units) or is based on body weight.

Injections into a vein are given by health care professionals with the appropriate training and supplies to do so.

To give a Glucagen Hypokit (Glucagon) injection under the skin, first prepare the injection. Once prepared, use it immediately and do not store for later use.

  1. Remove the flip-off seal from the vial (bottle) of Glucagen Hypokit (Glucagon).
  2. Remove the needle protector from the syringe, and inject the entire contents of the syringe into the bottle of Glucagen Hypokit (Glucagon). Do not remove the plastic clip from the syringe. Remove the syringe from the bottle.
  3. Swirl the bottle gently until the Glucagen Hypokit (Glucagon) dissolves completely. Glucagen Hypokit (Glucagon) should not be used unless the solution is clear and completely dissolved.
  4. Using the same syringe, hold bottle upside down and, making sure the needle tip remains in solution, withdraw all of the solution (1 mg mark on syringe) from the bottle. The plastic clip on the syringe will prevent the plunger from being pulled out of the syringe; however, if the plastic plunger rod separates from the rubber stopper, simply reinsert the rod by turning it clockwise.
  5. Clean the injection site on the buttock, arm, or thigh with an alcohol swab.
  6. Insert the needle into the fatty tissue under the cleaned injection site, and inject the Glucagen Hypokit (Glucagon) solution. There is no danger of overdose.
  7. Apply light pressure at the injection site, and withdraw the needle. Press an alcohol swab against the injection site.
  8. Turn the patient on their side. When an unconscious person awakens, they may vomit. Turning the patient on their side will prevent them from choking.

As soon as someone responds to Glucagen Hypokit (Glucagon), they should eat glucose (e.g., candy, orange juice, regular pop) to prevent low blood sugar from returning, and they should contact their doctor.

Glucagen Hypokit (Glucagon) is not very helpful when the low blood glucose is due to prolonged fasting, starvation, reduced adrenal function, and chronic low blood sugar. Under these circumstances, it is important to get immediate medical help to treat the low blood sugar.
